Oncle Valere’s Applecakes – what are they? - These wonderful applecakes were originally made in Flanders by Oncle Valere Desbuquois. Assembled and baked with Love, the high quality ingredients include best unsalted butter, unrefined sugar, quality flour, vine fruits and vanilla. About 1kilo of superb apples are used in each cake. Plus, of course, Oncle Valere’s unique blend of spices. Valere (that’s Oncle Valere’s nephew) lives in Bath and wanted his nieces and nephews to taste applecake – he sourced all the correct ingredients and, one day, he made some. They loved it and told their friends who loved it too. Soon he was making dozens, all created and baked by hand.

Why is Oncle Valere’s applecake so good? - Always local free range eggs, local butter and local apples in season, spices ground by hand. Top quality ingredients, baking with Love and a magical blend of exotic spices make Oncle Valere’s applecakes deliciously addictive. Applecake eaters say "Scrummy", "Delicious", "Munchy", "Loverley", "Addictive, "Lush", "Moist", "Yes, Yes, Yes", and much more…

How do I look after Oncle Valere’s Applecake?- The best place to keep Oncle Valere’s Applecake is – IN YOUR STOMACH! If you avoid the delicious temptation of eating it now and want to keep it for a few days longer, you can freeze it. If you don’t want to freeze it, don’t keep it in the fridge, but in your warm kitchen – that way you get the wonderful aroma too. Remember it’s made with natural ingredients and NO PRESERVATIVES and it needs to be eaten pretty quickly – don’t deny yourself the pleasure!

How can I buy Oncle Valere’s Applecake? - Oncle Valere’s applecake is sold in slices for £1.75, quarters (3 slices) for £4, halves for £8 and whole cakes for £15. Cake orders may be made on 07710 173005 (any time) for collection – large amounts can be delivered.

This month’s famous Belgian - Jeanne Deckers (1933-1985)
Jeanne was famous all over the world as 'The Singing Nun' and for her massive hit "Dominique", which reached number 1 all over the world and sold more than 1.5 million copies. She is the only Belgian ever to achieve a number one hit in America and temporarily topped such heavy hitters as Stevie Wonder and The Beatles in the charts. She joined the Dominican Fichermont Convent in Belgium as Sister Luc-Gabrielle. She was popular in the convent for her music and was encouraged by the other nuns to record an album in 1963. One song, "Dominique," soared to the top of the charts. Overnight, the Belgian nun was an international celebrity with the stage name of Soeur Sourire (Sister Smile). She performed in concerts and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. In 1965, a movie called The Singing Nun, starring Debbie Reynolds, was made about her. Remember?
